Stuart Attwell’s record refereeing Manchester City fixtures ahead of Crystal Palace match

Share
  • Stuart Attwell to referee Man City vs Crystal Palace
  • Will be his second City game this season
  • Also reffed 1-1 draw against Arsenal

Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace will be refereed by Stuart Attwell, the first time he’s overseen a City game since September’s draw at Arsenal.

City host Palace on Wednesday in a must-win game at the Etihad, with maximum points needed to keep their slim title hopes alive.

Pep Guardiola’s side trail leaders Arsenal by five points, with one game in hand over the Gunners, who have Burnley and Palace left to play.

With Wednesday’s officiating team now confirmed, we’re taking a look at Stuart Attwell’s record when refereeing Man City games.

Stuart Attwell to referee Man City vs Crystal Palace

Wednesday’s fixture will be overseen by Stuart Attwell, who last took charge of the Sky Blues in September, when they drew 1-1 with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Attwell will be assisted by Blake Antrobus and Constantine Hatzidakis on the touchlines, along with video assistant referee John Brooks, who refereed last season’s 0-0 Manchester derby draw.

Attwell’s record when refereeing Man City matches

In recent seasons, Attwell has refereed City on several occasions. City have won just two of their last six games when Attwell has been in charge.

Stuart Attwell’s record refereeing Man City (last six meetings)

Attwell was the man with the whistle in last season’s FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace. He handed out five bookings to City compared to just one for the Eagles.

He also refereed City’s 2-1 derby defeat at Old Trafford in 2023. Across these last six games, Attwell has awarded 11 yellow cards to City players, and 12 to opponents, while producing no red cards.

Attwell’s overall record on City games no cause for concern

While City have struggled in some recent fixtures when Attwell has been the referee, the overall record for matches he’s been in charge of should alleviate any fears from fans.

Attwell has overseen 25 City games since his first in 2010, with 17 wins, two draws and only six defeats for the Sky Blues.

There have been three City players sent off in that time, though none in the previous ten times he’s refereed the club.

Wednesday’s game should therefore be officiated fairly and with no prejudice against either team, as is the expectation with all Premier League matches.
