- Donnarumma joined last summer
- He has been superb this season
- The Italian has praised City fans
Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has praised the ‘special bond’ he has developed with fans after winning an award for his work in the community this season.
The towering, 6ft 4in Italian international has been immense for City since his arrival last summer from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
He has developed a close relationship with manager Pep Guardiola, previously stating that he feels ‘very lucky’ to work under the Catalan coach.
Donnarumma has kept 14 clean sheets in 32 Premier League games, second only to Arsenal’s David Raya in the Golden Glove race.
On top of his on-field heroics, the keeper has become a fan favourite for his off-field work, and has thanks the supporters while accepting an award for his community efforts.
Donnarumma thanks ‘special’ Manchester City fans
This week saw City celebrate the club-run charity, City in the Community (CITC), with Donnarumma receiving special recognition for his engagement with fans and charity work this season.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Donnarumma said: “They’ve all been really nice. Whether it’s around the city or through City in the Community, the interactions have been great, and everyone has been so welcoming. You see passion they have for the club, and it makes you proud to represent them,”
“That bond has been massive for me. The welcome I received from the fans was incredible and it helped me feel at home straight away. When fans show that belief and support, it gives you confidence and it really helps you settle in both on and off the pitch.”
Despite not directly working with CITC on official events, Donnarumma has personally donated numerous items throughout the season, helping to raise a significant amount of money for the charity.
Donnarumma recognised for community award
As a result of his generosity, the keeper has been named the PFA Community Champion for City’s men’s team this season – an unusual achievement for a player in their debut season at the club.
Donnarumma added: “From the moment I arrived at City, I could see how deeply embedded the club is in the local community. City in the Community do unbelievable work across Manchester and being able to support that was something I wanted to be involved in straight away.
“I wanted to make sure the items were meaningful and would genuinely benefit people. It wasn’t just about donating for the sake of it, but about choosing things that could help, bring some comfort or put a smile on someone’s face. If it can make even a small difference to someone, then it’s worth it.”
How good a signing has Donnarumma been?
With just 40 goals conceded in 39 games, Donnarumma has been an incredible addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
The Italian has 17 clean sheets in all competitions, and has proved exactly why the club made such an effort to bring him to the Etihad in August.
Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers of the modern era, and would walk into just about any team on earth.
