Phil Foden told to save ‘fizzled out’ career by switching Man City for Premier League newcomers

  • Phil Foden about to sign new Man City contract
  • Committing his long-term future to Citizens
  • Adrian Durham warns against decision

Phil Foden has received a warning about signing a new contract at Manchester City, with an alternative move proposed.

There will be new arrivals at Manchester City, but right now the club’s priority is tying their existing players down to new contracts.

Josko Gvardiol is nearing a new contract and there has also been recent movement in Phil Foden’s situation.

Apparently, Foden has agreed a new deal with Man City and even Pep Guardiola has confirmed that negotiations are going smoothly.

Therefore, it is highly likely that the England international will put pen to paper and recommit his future to the club of his youth.

Phil Foden told to swap Man City for Coventry

Foden will be delighted to continue with City, a club where he has won 18 trophies despite being just 25 years old.

However, Adrian Durham has bizarrely suggested the attacker should cancel his plans to sign a new deal and instead pursue a move to Coventry City.

He told talkSPORT: “So, what is the next step for Phil Foden? The next step isn’t signing a new contract at Manchester City for more of the same.

“Rayan Cherki is there. He isn’t going to give up his place to you easily. There are wingers there who are better than you: Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku are not going to give up their places easily.

“So, Phil Foden is a sub at best. So, I do not understand why he has signed a new contract.

“What he should have done this summer, and maybe, this might actually happen – I might be proved wrong here, I doubt it, but he should have sought a move to Coventry.

“Now, he might still go on loan. But go to Coventry City, be an absolute star, rip it up, keep them in the Premier League or take them to unbelievable heights in their first year back in the Premier League,” Durham continued.

“And while you are there, learn everything you need to know to be a top footballer at the top level for a long time from Frank Lampard.

“In the meantime, congratulations Phil Foden, you’ve had a great career, but it has fizzled out a bit now.”

Coventry would be an undesirable move for Foden

Right now, Foden is living his dream by playing for the club he grew up supporting. Plus, it is not as if he has been sitting on the bench all season.

Foden has made 46 appearances in all competitions and 31 of these have been starts, making Durham’s statement seem like a massive overreaction.

The academy graduate was having quite the run of games during the first half of December, and he simply needs to rediscover this form.

Antoine Semenyo has not exactly been at his best in recent weeks, so to say there is no chance of Foden playing in the first-team again is far-fetched.

This has been a difficult period for Foden, but his quality has not disappeared. He needs to keep going and work on returning to his best.

Starting matches is not everything

Even if Foden continues to be on the bench more often than not, this might still be more preferable than playing for Coventry.

The 25-year-old will still be able to contribute towards major successes, while Coventry’s reality next season is likely a mid-table finish at best.

Worse still, Frank Lampard’s team could actually find themselves in a relegation battle, which is not the type of situation Foden will wish to walk into.

It would be much better for him to remain at the club where he is wanted, and keep working towards building up his confidence.
