Ian Wright bemoans Man City’s 115 charges in Premier League title race analysis

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has cited the 115 charges Manchester City are facing for alleged financial regulation infringements as a reason for wanting Arsenal to win the Premier League title.

City were initially charged in February 2023, with an independent panel investigating the case in December 2024.

However, there has been no outcome published from the hearing, with charges relating to nine years from 2009-2018, alongside further charges for failing to comply with the Premier Leagues investigation.

The club strongly denies any wrongdoing and has robustly defended its actions at every stage, but some are not convinced.

Ian Wright discusses Manchester City 115 charges

Ex-Arsenal man Ian Wright has been discussing the 115 charges facing Man City. The former striker has indicated that Arsenal have been unfairly disadvantaged in this year’s title race.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Wright suggested that City have been able to build title-winning squads in a way that Arsenal could not, despite the alleged financial breaches.

Wright said: “We’re [Arsenal] chasing down a City side that we’re still talking about charges with them. How have they come to this? How have they done that? And still no outcome. We still don’t know what’s going on, and we’re chasing down that team.

“We can’t talk about it, people will probably slaughter me for mentioning it now. There’s bearing on the amount of money and the way they’re able to buy these great players. Listen, we’ve got Semenyo, and Guehi came in the [January] window. Arsenal can’t construct their team like how City have, and pay what they paid to get these players and be able to get those players.

“I don’t know how they get their money, but they’re able to get these top-quality players. We bought [Viktor] Gyokeres for nearly £70M, [Tijjani] Reijnders doesn’t even get on the pitch. What I’m trying to say is, we’re chasing down a team that has got carte blanche to do what they’re doing, and there are 115 charges. We can’t say anything about it and it’s still not resolved.”

Wright blames City for Arsenal’s style of play

With City spending big on signings, Wright claims they have been able to build a more exciting side than Arsenal, and therefore play a more attractive brand of football than the Gunners.

Wright continued: “City have been able to buy players to play a kind of football, entertaining, great football. We’ve had to constuct a team to try and not only beat them, but to beat them in the only way we can. I’d love us to play great football, I’d love us to. But this is the hand we’re dealt.”

Former Man United captain Roy Keane sympathised, adding: “Arsenal were criticised for the last few years for being a bit weak physically and mentally. And now they’re doing that side of it and people still aren’t happy.”

Have Man City had an unfair advantage over Arsenal?

Despite what Wright’s claims may have you believe, it is Arsenal, not City, that have the higher net spend in recent seasons.

The Gunners’s net spend since 2023/24 is around £400m, compared to City’s £360m over the same period.

There have been huge arrivals at the Etihad, but those big-money signings have been countenanced by some huge sales, with the likes of Cole Palmer, Julian Alvarez, Oscar Bobb and Riyah Mahrez all leaving for major fees.

There is perhaps an argument that, if found guilty, City’s alleged financial breaches have put them in a better long-term position. But it is simply false to suggest that Arsenal have not been able to spend on the same level as their title rivals.
