Jeremy Doku says Manchester City ‘won’t give up’ Premier League title fight despite Everton draw

  • Man City drew at Everton on Monday
  • Doku scored important last minute goal
  • Delivers determined message ahead of final four games

Jeremy Doku has made it clear that Manchester City are not out of the Premier League title race, despite dropping points against Everton.

Doku grabbed the opener before half-time at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with City looking in complete control against the Toffees.

But a shambolic second-half collapse saw the Sky Blues concede three goals in 15 minutes, as their Premier League title hopes looked to be evaporating.

Erling Haaland then pulled one back to reduce the arrears, before Doku’s second strike rescued a point for Pep Guardiola’s team, deep into stoppage time.

Jeremy Doku says Man City ‘won’t give up’ in title fight

Speaking via the Manchester City website, Doku was defiant in stating that neither he nor his teammates had given up hopes of winning the Premier League.

He said: “We did not give up, and we are not going to give up. There are still some games, we are going to fight until the end and at the end we will count the points. [We are] disappointed but it is not over, we are not going to give up. We are going to recover now, take the positives, take the negatives and work on it.

“There are a lot of games, we have a busy schedule, and we are going to look forward. We are still in two competitions, we have a final to play. One point is better than nothing, we came for three points and it did not work out.

“In the first half we started well, created a lot of chances, in a lot of positions. We scored then in the second half they pushed more, we made some mistakes and they scored a couple of goals. It was difficult to come back. It’s still not over, we are going to focus on the next game and try to do our best.”

Recovery will be vital for City in final weeks

With a frantic end to the season, City now face five games in 15 days, including the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday, 16 May.

Doku stressed that recovery, both physical and mental, will be of the utmost importance in the closing weeks of the season.

“We are going to recover well,” he added. “Mentally we have all been in this position, we are used to playing every three days.

“The most important thing is to recover mentally and physically. There are tough games to come but we are ready for it, we are looking forward.”

Man City can still win the title

Monday’s draw may not have been what City wanted, but the title race is far from over. An Arsenal loss in any of their final three games would mean another complete swing in terms of momentum.

The Gunners face West Ham and Crystal Palace away from home, either side of hosting already-relegated Burnley.

Each of those should be Arsenal wins on paper, but as legendary manager Brian Clough said, football is played on grass, not paper.

All City can do now is win their remaining games, but one slip-up from Arsenal is all Guardiola’s side needs to be right back in the race.
