- Man City overcame Southampton
- Citizens struggled to secure victory
- Required two late goals
Manchester City are through to the FA Cup final, but there was not much to shout about for most of the match.
Southampton deserve credit for their performance, but Man City fans will be frustrated by what they saw at Wembley.
Here are three players who managed to put in a good display, and three more who have a lot to reflect on.
Nico Gonzalez scored the winning goal for Man City
Wednesday saw Nico Gonzalez snubbed, despite the fact that Rodri was unavailable due to his ongoing injury.
However, the Spaniard started against Southampton and he produced a brilliant strike when it mattered the most.
Nico successfully played six accurate long balls, and proved that he deserves to be appearing for Man City more often.
Jeremy Doku changed the game
Man City were a long way off their best, but there was a notable improvement when Doku was introduced in the 58th minute.
The winger got himself a goal and an assist, which was the difference between an exit and progression to the cup final.
Doku has been an important player for City in recent weeks and he could continue to be one of the main players driving the club towards success this season.
John Stones had a solid performance
After a decade, it is looking more likely that Stones is going to leave Manchester City, but he is still contributing as much as he can.
The England international completed five accurate long balls, eight clearances and six headed clearances.
Wearing the captain’s armband, Stones led his team to victory in what could well have been his final start for the Sky Blues.
Omar Marmoush wasted his chances
Of all Man City’s squad players, Marmoush is considered as one of the best. He has scored six goals this season, some of which have bore significance.
However, the striker was way off the pace against Southampton, failing to take advantage of any opportunities which came his way.
Additionally, Marmoush always took too long on the ball which sometimes resulted in a Saints defender putting in a tackle before he could properly get his shot away.
Phil Foden looked lost
Foden was handed a start after a string of matches on the bench, but he failed to make the most of his opportunity.
Whether he was playing on the wing or moving inside, Foden never really looked doing anything to help his team out.
The 25-year-old was essentially a passenger and had only 31 touches during his 58 minutes on the pitch.
Savinho missed a goalscoring chance
Despite Guardiola making the decision to rotate his team, Savinho was not selected to start at Wembley.
The Brazilian was brought in as a replacement for Foden and he had a great opportunity to score, but his effort had no direction.
It was cleared off the line by a Southampton defender, as the 22-year-old failed to make the most of his cameo.
