- Man City travel to Burnley on Wednesday
- A win sees City move to the top of the table
- Clarets boss Parker is relishing the challenge
Burnley boss Scott Parker is looking forward to facing the ‘elite of the elite’ when Manchester City travel to Turf Moor on Wednesday night in the Premier League.
Wednesday’s meeting between Man City and Burnley could have huge ramifications at both ends of the table, for very different reasons.
Victory for Pep Guardiola’s side would lift them above Arsenal to the top of the table for the first time since August. Burnley, meanwhile, will be relegated if they fail to win.
Despite the pressure, Clarets boss Parker has been looking forward to facing the Sky Blues and the opportunity for his players to test themselves against the best.
Scott Parker relishing Manchester City challenge
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Parker admitted that Burnley’s relegation has been coming for some time, regardless of how they fare against City.
He told Sky Sports: “The outcome of tomorrow night and the situation of what it can be is one that the players have probably been facing in terms of that, having an understanding of where we are and searching for something here.
“So yeah, I don’t think that’s a big player in terms of us. That’s been a challenge for us over the last few months, to be quite honest with you, because we’ve not managed to pick up results.
“That burden has obviously been on our shoulders for some time now. Of course, the reality may be that for tomorrow night.”

However, despite the probable outcome, Parker said he relished the challenge of facing the Carabao Cup winners.
He added: “We’re going up against the elite of the elite. From a coach to individual players, that’s a challenge there that we should be relishing really in a one-off game of 90 minutes,
“It’s one that we should be relishing as individuals to go up against the best in the world and see if we can lay a mark on them.”
History on Man City’s side against Burnley
City’s record against Burnley is one of the most one-sided match-ups in the Premier League era, with 18 wins from the last 19, including the previous 14 in a row.
Burnley have beaten Man City just once since the turn of the millennium – a 1-0 victory at Turf Moor in March 2015.
From June 2020 to August 2023, Guardiola’s side recorded six straight victories over the Clarets, without conceding a single goal.
It would therefore take a remarkable upset for Burnley to take points away from the Citizens, whom they have beaten only once in the past 50 years.
City cannot afford a slip-up
Despite the stats suggesting an easy win, there is no room for complacency in the Man City dressing room.
Anything but three points will hand Arsenal a lifeline in the title race, and mean The Gunners are once again in the driving seat for the Premier League run-in.
Momentum is crucial at this stage of the season. City have it, for now, but a wobble at Turf Moor and a missed opportunity to move to the top of the league could quickly change things.
Guardiola must ensure his players don’t lose focus and deliver a clinical, professional performance and take maximum points away from a game they are expected to win comfortably.
