Yaya Toure at Selhurst Park? You know the rest.
Returning to the first team fold for the first time since a very public feud between Pep Guardiola and agent Dimitri Seluk, Yaya Toure struck twice to lead City to a hard fought victory against Crystal Palace.
The rangy Ivorian was accompanied by the also returning Vincent Kompany, however the Club captain was less fortunate, seeing his outing curtailed after a nasty collision with the on-rushing Claudio Bravo.
City were far from their free-flowing best, but they took the lead late in the first half after a neat interchange between Toure and Nolito. Chances were at a premium – Toure’s strike was City’s first meaningful opportunity of the match.
The hosts cranked up the pressure after half-time and pulled level through Connor Wickham’s powerful strike evaded Bravo. Seconds earlier Aguero was inches from doubling City’s advantage but for the timely intervention of Joel Ward. The Chilean stopper had earlier denied Benteke expertly, however he didn’t cover himself in glory with Wickham’s effort.
City wrestled back control thereafter but seemed destined for yet another frustrating 1-1 draw. Toure, though, had other ideas. He got across his man well to turn home a cleverly worked set-piece, much to the relief of his team mates and the travelling support.
It wasn’t vintage, but it was effective and could be crucial as the title race continues to pan out. Join us as we examine four key points from today’s game.
