Manchester City defender Shay Facey has joined Championship side Rotherham on loan until the end of the season.
The 20-year-old was on loan with the Sky Blues’ sibling club New York City for the second half of 2015, but now looks to gain experience in the English game.
Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn made it clear that the youngster’s versatility was decisive in the Millers’ move for him.
He is a utility defender, he’s 20-years-old and he can play at right-back or centre-back.
With Jason Denayer also out on loan, the move leaves City with just four first-team centre-backs – Nicolas Otamendi, Eliaquim Mangala, Martin Demichelis and Vincent Kompany. And, with the latter’s recent injury problems, this is cause for concern for some of the Citizens’ fans.
After revealing that Facey had been looking at the ongoings of the club for the last couple of weeks, Redfearn was full of praise for the England youth international.
He has been here now for two or three weeks so he has had chance to have a look at us, and we have had a look at him. He will be really looking forward to the challenge, like I have said he is an outstanding player, but physically he can also cope and that is what struck me most about him when he came in. He has the pace, physique and a front foot aggressive attitude to go and play.
