Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany posted an emotional status on Facebook after a recurrence of his calf injury meant that the Belgian lasted just nine minutes upon his return to the first-team squad.
Kompany was brought on as a second-half substitute during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Sunderland, replacing Nicolas Otamendi with 28 minutes of regulation time remaining. However, Argentine centre-half Martin Demichelis was called upon in the 71st minute when the 29-year-old limped off with the same injury that has prevented him appearing in the Sky Blues’ previous eight matches.
The former Hamburg centre-back implied that he would not be available in Tuesday’s crucial clash with Leicester City by urging supporters to ‘make next year a wonderful year’.
I wish you all the very best for 2016. Let’s all together make next year, a wonderful year.
Kompany also made it clear to the Citizens’ fans that, despite the small injuries, his body feels ‘invincible’.
My body feels invincible – the best it’s ever been – but i’m challenged by a number of small and local injuries. It leaves me more frustrated than with any of the ‘big’ injuries I’ve had but it’s a challenge that I will overcome.
In his post-match interview, manager Manuel Pellegrini gave no indication as to how long his skipper would be on the sidelines. However, City supporters will hope that Kompany returns to action sooner rather than later, with their team looking to sustain a title challenge and become Premier League champions for the third time in five years.
