Manchester City sent scouts to watch highly-rated PSV playmaker Gaston Pereiro in their midweek match against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, according to Manchester Evening News.
Pereiro caught the eye of several top clubs at the Under-20 South American Cup in January. However, PSV fought off the interest and managed to acquire the 20-year-old’s services for a fee in the region of £5m.
The youngster became an immediate fans’ favourite in Holland when he replaced Memphis Depay in the PSV line-up. The Uruguayan youth international has been dubbed ‘the next Luis Suarez’ by fans across his home country.
The former Nacional midfielder has scored 16 goals in his 54 appearances at club level and has also netted six times in 12 matches for Uruguay’s U20s.
In April 2012, Pereiro had a trial at Premier League side Liverpool. However, alongside his Nacional teammates – Diego Baldi, Leandro Otormin and Rodrigo Amaral – he was rejected and sent back to his hometown club and then went on to guide them to their 45th league title.
