Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is adamant that Sergio Aguero was substituted against Southampton due to fatigue rather than because he had suffered another injury.
The Argentine limped off of the field after 63 minutes, causing some City fans concern. The 27-year-old has only just returned from over a month out with a recurring hamstring problem and supporters thought that Aguero was struggling with it again.
However, Pellegrini has gone out of his way to assure the club’s followers that he made the decision to take him off was because he didn’t want the former Atletico Madrid to do too much after lengthy lay-off.
I spoke with Aguero before the game and we said he would play 65 minutes. He has played three games in a row and that’s why he came off.
City fans will be praying that South America’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer remains fit as the only two other strikers in their squad – Wilfried Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho – have just three goals between them.
The Sky Blues were, however, boosted by the return of David Silva from the bench and an impressive performance from injury-prone Fabian Delph as the Citizens returned to the top of the table with a 3-1 victory over the Saints.
