Sky Sports’ Spanish expert Guillem Balague believes that Manchester City are trying to secure a deal which would see Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi to the Etihad Stadium.
Whilst Balague remains adamant that City are not the only English team looking to lure the Argentine away from the Nou Camp, he thinks that, if they appoint Pep Guardiola as their new manager, the Sky Blues will be clear favourites.
We have said already that there are three English clubs that have approached Messi’s representatives saying we are willing to take you. All those clubs are trying to do, and I’m sure City are one of them, is try to convince him. If Manchester City are to appoint Pep Guardiola as their coach, could that have an influence on Messi’s decision? Absolutely.
Messi does not want to leave Spain purely for monetary reasons, but his ongoing tax trial could play a major part in where his long-term future lies.
Reports had suggested that the club’s all-time top goalscorer was considering leaving after they prioritised Neymar’s contract extension. However, Balague does not think that this was the case.
It’s not about money if he goes. It’s certainly not about money or the fact that Barcelona is trying to give Neymar a new contract, nothing to do with that.
