Manchester City extended their winless streak to three games having been condemned to a 1-0 defeat against Juventus.
City, despite creating a number of clear-cut chances, lacked the killer touch in the final third and were undone in the first half when Mario Mandzukic pounced for the Turin side.
Sergio Aguero only lasted little longer than an hour and his replacement Raheem Sterling squandered a golden opportunity to level matters.
The Bianconeri win means that Juventus are now group leaders ahead of City, who need to beat Monchengladbach and hope that Sevilla beat Juve to top the table.
Even worse for City though, Joe Hart was forced off with an injury – adding to Manuel Pellegrini’s woes on the treatment table.
