Former Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard has blasted the club for being too dependent on their key players.
As a pundit on Sky Sports for Saturday night’s 4-1 loss to Liverpool, the New York City midfielder felt that without players like Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva, ‘you do wonder where they will pick up the points’.
Lampard’s main argument, however, was how Liverpool’s rampant display against an uninterested City side exhibited their reliance on Vincent Kompany.
City were nowhere near their best, that was apparent from the first 10 minutes when they were off the pace slightly. They have got two centre-halves in there who are not used to playing together, they are missing their captain, and that became apparent very quickly.
After mentioning that the fact that he still believes Manchester City will go on to win the Premier League title this season, Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer remained adamant that issues must be addressed.
I do not think that it changes, though, a few fundamental problems they still have – when Vincent Kompany does not play, you can see that they struggle at the back.
City will look to restore the confidence in the team with a midweek win over reigning Serie A champions Juventus. Three points for Manuel Pellegrini’s men will see them secure 1st place in Group D which should see them drawn against a more favourable opponent in the Round of 16.
