Ahead of the opening game of the new Premier League season against West Brom, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has revealed he is focused on silverware and team success over his own personal goals this term.
Aguero, who recently took the vacant No. 10 shirt from the departed Edin Dzeko, finished as the Premier League’s top scorer last season with 26 goals (32 in all competitions), winning him the Golden Boot award and Etihad Player of the Season; voted for by the City fans. However, he has said that he’d happily score fewer goals than this if it meant the team won more silverware, with his astounding goal record last season resulting in nothing more than a 2nd placed finish for The Blues.
It is not certain whether Aguero will start at the Hawthorns tomorrow night, having just returned from the Copa America, but he is looking forward to getting the season underway again and lead the line for City in pursuit of trophies once again.
He told MCFC: “The challenge is to aim higher to keep growing. I’m satisfied if any goals I score, whatever the number, helps City win titles. I’ve always prioritised team achievements over personal ones. It’s no different this year.”
The Argentine also had plenty to say about the assumptions that City will finish out of the top two this season for the first time in five years.
“I believe it’s quite bold to make such predictions,’ he said, ‘That’s only talking about the Premier League, and not the other cups we’ve won along the way. We have set the bar very high and we hope to keep it that way. City must always aim to win as many trophies as possible.”
And in response to the signing of new man Raheem Sterling, Aguero had plenty of positive things to say about the Englishman, and looks forward to linking up with him in the upcoming campaign.
“He’s a good player and a quick one, too. He can be a great asset when we are on the attack and I’m looking forward to playing alongside him.”
“It goes without saying that the sooner he settles into the team the better for everyone.”
