Fabian Delph has scored his fair share of great goals over the past couple of seasons.
We pick out five strikes that will excite City fans and hope that he can do the same in a blue shirt.
Liverpool (N)
Delph was massively influential in Aston Villa’s FA Cup run and shone in the semi-final win over Liverpool at Wembley. He picked out Christian Benteke brilliantly for the equaliser before grabbing a second half winner. In this instance, he displayed great movement to get in behind and latch onto a pass from Grealish before checking inside and finishing with aplomb.
West Brom (H)
Before the trip to Wembley, Villa’s FA Cup exploits consisted of a derby clash with West Brom and Delph took charge in the game. He netted the first goal in a 2-0 win for the Villans. He received the ball in the left channel after a counter-attack and duly slammed home, leaving Ben Foster helpless in goal.
Chelsea (H)
In 2013/14, Villa recorded a shock win over Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at Villa Park and that then aided City in their title push. Delph was outstanding in the game and the goal he scored was simply stunning. It is a goal that epitomises what he is all about, energy, drive and skill when it matters. He collected the ball in his own half and surged through Chelsea’s midfield – embarrassing Nemanja Matic in the process. After feeding his winger on the left flank, he finished the move with the most audacious flick that outwitted Petr Cech. More of the same please, Fabian.
Southampton (A)
Delph is an accomplished striker of the ball and he demonstrated that to great effect against Southampton in the 2013/14 campaign. He absolutely walloped’ this one into the top corner and it’s the type of goal that City fans could get used to. A proper net-buster.
West Brom (H)
Finally, one of my favourite goals that I’ve seen pop up in various compilations has been his strike in a thrilling derby, again in 2013/14. He had scored an unfortunate own goal earlier in the game. The touch and speed of the movement to work an opening is just phenomenal and the finish is nothing short of sublime. When you see goals like this, it’s easy to see why City have brought him in for a measly sum of £8 million.
