Breaking news this afternoon tells us that highly-rated Manchester City defender Jason Denayer has penned a new five-year deal at City, which keeps him at the Etihad until 2020.
City announced it on their official Twitter account on Monday and the news was met with a huge sigh of relief from a number of Blues’ fans, as the emergence of Denayer has made him hot property on the market and target for an array of sides. His previous contract lasted until June 2016.
The Belgian defender was loaned out to Celtic last season, making 29 appearances and scoring 5 goals (not bad for a centre-back). He enjoyed a fruitful campaign; clinching the SPL title with ease and receiving praise from his national team coach Marc Wilmots; earning his first caps for his country in the European qualifiers a few weeks ago.
Although it didn’t look like Denayer was going anywhere before he signed this deal, the news of him pledging his future to City is reassuring and ensures we hang on to a player who could well become as good as, if not better than, his Belgian counterpart Vincent Kompany.
The youngster has blossomed in quality since his loan north last term, making the majority of City fans excited at the prospect of a Denayer-Kompany defensive partnership in the not-so-distant future.
The ageing Martin Demichelis still has playing time left in him, but Denayer is an apt replacement for the Argentine and means City will not have to worry about investing in another centre-back to fill the void.
Denayer has the potential to establish himself as a regular starter for City in the coming years, and the signing of this new deal is just the start of what we hope is going to be an excellent career for him.
