The Belgian has returned three weeks before his team-mates, after a difficult campaign last term. He is trying to get back into shape for the new season.
He was able to make time for training after his suspension for the Euro Qualifiers against a strong Welsh side.
He told City’s website:
“You need your holidays. I was suspended from national team so I had a few more holidays than the rest of the guys, so I’m giving myself the chance to come back in the exact condition I want to be before the start of the season.”
Kompany, the club, and the supporters want to bring back trophies like they did in previous years, after a hard season left them trophyless and searching for improvement.
Last season, Chelsea took the Blues Premier League crown, while City barely advanced in the Champions League group stages, losing to Barcelona in a difficult tie in the Round of 16.
Their first challenging friendlies will be in July in Australia where they will be facing Italian outfit AS Roma, and Spanish giants Real Madrid. Kompany claims the Madrid match with provide a reminder for club’s goals:
“You want to measure your level at that time. I wouldn’t take too much from the result but you always see some young players come through in those (pre-season) games, you see a different shape, different players standing up, so it’s always an exciting time, and for the fans as you see how the team is shaping up for the new season… ever since I’ve been at the club we’ve always tried to make the gap between the top clubs like Real Madrid smaller and in some way achieved it, but it’d be nice now to bridge that gap.”
The club will also rely on the transfer window, as Chilean manager Manuel Pelligrini is targeting Raheem Sterling and Paul Pogba.
