Man City spent £458m this summer – but there is another remarkable number

City have completed the most expensive summer transfer window ever seen by a Premier League club – but there is another number which helps put Enzo Maresca’s extraordinary rebuild into context.

Around £458m was spent on new players over the summer, according to figures reported by Reuters, eclipsing the previous Premier League single-window record.

Deadline Day alone brought the £125m arrival of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea and £65m signing of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.

But City weren’t just spending.

They were selling too.

More than £280m came back in

Reuters calculates that City recouped around £280m from departures during a remarkable summer of turnover, while other calculations put the figure even higher.

Rodri joined Barcelona, Savinho moved to Tottenham and Nico González signed for Newcastle, while Tijjani Reijnders and James Trafford were among the other significant departures.

Bernardo Silva and John Stones also left on free transfers.

It means the headline £458m expenditure tells only part of the story.

This wasn’t simply City adding expensive players to an already established squad.

It was a rebuild.

Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest for a reported £116m, before Ayyoub Bouaddi joined from Lille for £86m.

Then came the Deadline Day finale.

Ndiaye arrived from Everton for £65m before Fernández completed his £125m move from Chelsea, equalling the British transfer record.

Maresca therefore heads into the next stage of the season with a squad which looks dramatically different to the one he inherited following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

There has certainly been a huge cost attached to that transformation.

But there has also been an enormous amount of money generated by moving players out.

Perhaps the most striking thing isn’t simply that City spent around £458m.

It’s that they were able to completely reshape the squad, break the Premier League’s summer spending record and still recoup somewhere north of £280m in the process.

Now comes the important bit.

Maresca has the squad.

He has been backed spectacularly.

What City do with it will ultimately determine whether one of the most extraordinary transfer windows English football has seen was money well spent.
