Fabrizio Romano confirms Man City exit as £45m deal completed

It has been a summer of significant change in the goalkeeping department at Manchester City, and Wednesday brought the clearest sign yet that the reshuffle is reaching its conclusion.

City have been working through a busy window, and the goalkeeper position has been one of the most active areas of the squad. Talks over a replacement have been progressing while an exit edged closer by the hour.

Earlier today, the medical was completed and the paperwork began moving between the clubs. It felt like only a matter of time before the final confirmation arrived.

Now, it seems, the deal is done.

City exit completed in £45m club-record deal

According to Fabrizio Romano, James Trafford has completed his move from Manchester City to Leeds United in a £45m deal, a club-record signing for the Yorkshire side.

Romano reports that the agreement also includes a future-profit clause in City’s favour, meaning the club would benefit from any subsequent sale down the line.

That detail matters. Man City have become masters of structuring exits with sell-on protection, and retaining an interest in a 23-year-old England goalkeeper’s future feels like smart business on top of a substantial fee.

The fee itself is striking too. Reports earlier in the day had placed the deal at around £40m, so the final £45m figure suggests Leeds pushed hard to get their man on Wednesday.

Romano had flagged earlier on Wednesday that Leeds had completed the formal steps of the deal, with medical tests done and documents being exchanged between the two clubs, so the confirmation always felt close.

Trafford only returned to the Etihad from Burnley last summer, but with competition for the number one shirt fierce, a permanent move for regular football always looked the most likely outcome this window.

Attention turns to the replacement

Of course, this exit does not happen in isolation. It was covered earlier today how Trafford’s Leeds medical set the wheels in motion for City’s next piece of goalkeeping business.

City have been closing in on Geronimo Rulli as the experienced option to restore depth behind the first choice, and the funds banked from this sale give the club room to finish that deal without delay.

Interestingly, the timing works neatly for all parties. Leeds get their record signing through the door with weeks of the window remaining, while Man City bank a significant fee for a back-up goalkeeper and protect themselves with a clause if his value continues to rise.

To be fair to Trafford, few will begrudge him the move. An academy product who came through the ranks at Man City, he impressed during his spells away from the club earlier in his career, and a fresh start with regular Premier League football is exactly what this stage of his development demands.

His route to this point has been anything but straightforward. Sold once and brought back, he has had to prove himself away from the Etihad before earning his way into the conversation at the highest level, and that resilience will serve him well in Yorkshire.

Keeper position now in focus

From a squad-building perspective, the sale also strengthens City’s position elsewhere. Pure profit on academy graduates has become one of the most valuable currencies in the modern game, and a £45m fee for a goalkeeper who was not first choice is exceptional business by any measure.

All that remains now is the formal unveiling at Elland Road, and for City the focus shifts entirely to completing the business at the other end of this particular chain.

City’s window is not finished yet, but the goalkeeping picture is finally coming into focus. Expect the next domino to fall soon.
