# Man City news: Haaland rested, Donnarumma backed and Tresoldi watched

**[City](https://readmancity.com/) are preparing for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton, but the build-up has provided plenty of news away from the game itself.**

Enzo Maresca has confirmed five senior players will be rested, Gianluigi Donnarumma has received his manager’s backing, and City scouts have watched an in-form striker. There have also been developments involving Claudio Echeverri and Sheikh Mansour.

## Haaland among five to miss Brighton

Erling Haaland, Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol, Elliot Anderson and Gianluigi Donnarumma will all miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie after Maresca gave them three days off following the defeat at Aston Villa.

Matheus Nunes remains injured, while Gerónimo Rulli has been confirmed as City’s starting goalkeeper as Maresca prepares to rotate his squad.

## Maresca backs Donnarumma

Donnarumma’s break comes after recent criticism of his performances, including his part in Nicolas Jackson’s second goal at Villa Park.

Maresca has publicly backed his first-choice goalkeeper, saying Donnarumma has performed well since arriving at City and stressing that mistakes are inevitable during a demanding season.

## City scouts see Tresoldi hat-trick

City representatives were reportedly in Belgium to watch Club Brugge striker Nicolò Tresoldi – and the 22-year-old responded by scoring a hat-trick.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle were also represented as interest builds around a forward enjoying an impressive season, although there is no suggestion City have opened talks over a move.

## Benfica consider Echeverri future

Claudio Echeverri’s future has also been discussed, with Benfica boss Marco Silva responding to the possibility of making the midfielder’s loan move permanent.

Benfica have an option to buy the 20-year-old, but Silva says there is no need for an early decision as Echeverri continues to settle in Portugal.

## Sheikh Mansour makes £100m investment

Away from the pitch, Sheikh Mansour has invested another £100m into City’s parent company, City Football Group.

Companies House filings show more than 11million new shares were allotted earlier this month, providing another tangible indication of Mansour’s continued financial commitment to CFG.

## Brighton bring some familiar cup history

Wednesday will not be the first time City and Brighton have crossed paths in knockout football. Their previous meetings include Brighton’s memorable League Cup penalty shootout victory in 2008 and City’s 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win at Wembley in 2019.
