# Man City v Brighton cup history includes penalty upset and Wembley semi-final

**[City](https://readmancity.com/) and Brighton renew a cup rivalry stretching back more than a century when they meet in the Carabao Cup at the Etihad on Wednesday.**

It will be only the fifth knockout meeting between the clubs and the second in the League Cup. The previous four have produced two City victories and two Brighton progressions, including a penalty shootout upset shortly after Sheikh Mansour’s takeover.

## Man City and Brighton share eventful cup history

Their first competitive meeting of any kind came in the FA Cup in February 1924. City travelled to Brighton and won 5-1 in the third round before going on to reach the semi-finals, where Newcastle United ended their run.

Brighton produced a far more memorable result of their own almost 60 years later. The Seagulls beat City 4-0 at the Goldstone Ground in the fourth round of the 1982/83 FA Cup and went all the way to Wembley that season, eventually losing to Manchester United in a replay.

The clubs’ only previous League Cup meeting arrived in September 2008, just weeks after City’s takeover and the signing of Robinho. Gelson Fernandes put City ahead, but Glenn Murray equalised before Joe Anyinsah and Stephen Ireland traded goals in extra time to leave the score at 2-2.

Brighton then won the shootout 5-3, eliminating a City side whose circumstances had changed dramatically only weeks earlier.

City had to wait until 2019 for another cup meeting with the south-coast club. Gabriel Jesus scored after four minutes of their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, and the 1-0 victory sent Pep Guardiola’s side into the final, where they beat Watford 6-0 to complete the domestic treble.

Wednesday’s [Carabao Cup fourth-round tie](https://readmancity.com/2026/10/26/man-city-brighton-carabao-cup-tv-channel-how-to-watch/) therefore brings the sides together in the competition for the first time in 18 years. City have never beaten Brighton in the League Cup, giving the latest meeting another small piece of history to settle.
