# Maresca backs Gianluigi Donnarumma after criticism of Man City form

**Enzo Maresca has backed Gianluigi Donnarumma following criticism of the goalkeeper’s recent performances for [City](https://readmancity.com/).**

Donnarumma came under scrutiny following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, when Nicolas Jackson’s second goal went underneath the Italy international. It followed a difficult Champions League night against former club PSG earlier this month, when City were beaten 4-2.

## Maresca keeps faith with Donnarumma

Maresca accepts criticism is inevitable when players make mistakes but remains pleased with the goalkeeper’s contribution since the start of the season. Speaking before Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton, the City boss said Donnarumma had “done well” and pointed towards the demands being placed on players during a busy schedule.

The 27-year-old joined City from PSG in the summer and quickly established himself as first choice. His recent displays have attracted more attention, but Maresca’s comments offered a clear indication that a couple of difficult moments have not altered his view of the goalkeeper.

There will nevertheless be a change between the posts against Brighton. Gerónimo Rulli has been confirmed as City’s starter for the [Carabao Cup fourth-round tie](https://readmancity.com/2026/10/26/man-city-brighton-carabao-cup-tv-channel-how-to-watch/), with Donnarumma one of five senior players given three days off following the Villa defeat.

Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Elliot Anderson have also been afforded the break as Maresca manages his squad through a demanding run of fixtures. City face Brighton again in the Premier League at the Etihad on Saturday, when Donnarumma could return to the side.

Maresca has also stressed that experienced players know when they have made mistakes and do not necessarily need the coaching staff to point them out. His response to Donnarumma’s recent form was therefore one of support rather than concern, with City looking for their goalkeeper to respond when he returns.
