# Kyle Walker reveals Harry Kane wanted to join Man City as transfer came ‘very close’

**Former Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has revealed that Harry Kane wanted to move to the Etihad Stadium when the club pursued the Tottenham striker in 2021.**

City made Kane their leading attacking target that summer as Pep Guardiola looked to strengthen a side which had won the Premier League but lost the Champions League final to Chelsea.

The move never materialised, and Kane remained at Tottenham for another two seasons, but Walker has now offered an insight into the England captain’s thinking during the negotiations.

## Walker reveals Kane wanted Man City move

Speaking to [talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/4658663/harry-kane-man-city-transfer-tottenham-fee-kyle-walker/), Walker said Kane had reached a stage of his career where he wanted to win club trophies and was keen on joining [Manchester City](https://readmancity.com/).

“He said, ‘I want to come,'” Walker revealed, adding that Kane asked him about the club and that the proposed transfer was “very close”.

Walker stressed that Kane never told him a move was certain and suggested the clubs were ultimately unable to reach an agreement. Guardiola subsequently revealed that City had made four attempts to sign the striker, with Tottenham rejecting each approach.

## City eventually turn to Haaland

Kane remained in north London for the 2021/22 season and scored 17 Premier League goals as Tottenham qualified for the Champions League. City retained the title despite spending much of the campaign without a conventional first-choice centre-forward.

Their search for an elite number nine ended the following summer when Erling Haaland arrived from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian scored 52 goals in all competitions during his first season as City won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

Kane eventually secured his move away from Tottenham in August 2023, joining Bayern Munich and establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s leading forwards.

The failed City transfer remains one of the more intriguing episodes of Kane’s Tottenham career. Walker’s account adds a significant detail to a familiar story: while the two clubs could not agree a deal, Kane himself was interested in making the move.
