## 2008: A goalless first meeting

The first competitive meeting came in the UEFA Cup group stage in December 2008.

Mark Hughes was City’s manager and Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany were among the players involved as the sides drew 0-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium. It remained their only meeting for more than seven years.

## 2016: De Bruyne sends City into first Champions League semi-final

City and PSG met again in the quarter-finals of the 2015-16 Champions League.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring in the first leg in Paris before Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adrien Rabiot put PSG ahead. Fernandinho equalised to secure a 2-2 draw for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

De Bruyne scored again in the return match, his 76th-minute goal giving City a 1-0 victory and a 3-2 aggregate win. It took City into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, where they were beaten by Real Madrid.

## 2021: City beat PSG to reach first final

Five years later, the clubs were drawn together in the Champions League semi-finals.

Marquinhos headed PSG ahead in the first leg at the Parc des Princes, but City responded after half-time. De Bruyne equalised before Riyad Mahrez scored from a free-kick to secure a 2-1 away win.

Mahrez was decisive again at the Etihad. The winger scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s side won the second leg 2-0 and completed a 4-1 aggregate victory. City had reached their first Champions League final, although Chelsea beat them 1-0 in Porto.

## Messi scores as PSG claim first win

There was little time to wait for another meeting, with City and PSG drawn together in the group stage the following season.

PSG recorded their first victory over City in September 2021, winning 2-0 in Paris. Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring before Lionel Messi scored his first PSG goal following his move from Barcelona. City responded when the sides met at the Etihad two months later. Kylian Mbappe put PSG ahead shortly after half-time, but Raheem Sterling equalised before Gabriel Jesus completed a 2-1 comeback victory.

## 2025: City lose two-goal lead in Paris

The most recent meeting produced the highest-scoring game between the clubs.

City travelled to the Parc des Princes in January 2025 for a Champions League league-phase match and took control early in the second half. Jack Grealish scored in the 50th minute before Erling Haaland made it 2-0 three minutes later. The lead disappeared quickly.

Ousmane Dembele pulled one back in the 56th minute, and Bradley Barcola equalised four minutes later. Joao Neves put PSG ahead before Goncalo Ramos completed a 4-2 victory in stoppage time. It was PSG’s second victory over City in eight attempts and left Guardiola’s side needing a result in their final league-phase game to continue in the competition.

## Man City v PSG: The numbers

City have generally had the better of the fixture, particularly in Manchester.

They are unbeaten in their four previous competitive home games against PSG, winning three and drawing the other. PSG’s two victories have both come at the Parc des Princes. Wednesday’s game will be the ninth competitive meeting between the clubs and their eighth in the Champions League.

## What has changed since Man City last faced PSG?

The clubs meet again at the Etihad on Wednesday night with PSG returning to Manchester in a very different position from their last visit.

Their 4-2 comeback against City in January 2025 became part of the run which eventually took Luis Enrique’s side to their first Champions League title. PSG retained the trophy in 2026 and therefore arrive at the Etihad as back-to-back European champions.

City have also changed considerably since that night in Paris. Enzo Maresca is now in charge and his side have started the season with eight successive victories, including a 2-0 win away to Porto in their opening Champions League league-phase fixture.

They followed that with a 3-0 Premier League win at Liverpool on Sunday before turning their attention to PSG.

The historical record remains in City’s favour. They have won four of the previous eight competitive meetings and have never lost to PSG at home, winning three of the four encounters in Manchester.

Wednesday will be the ninth competitive meeting between the clubs and the fifth at City’s home ground.
