City’s owners, directors and executives could face separate scrutiny from English football’s independent regulator following the club’s guilty verdict.
David Kogan, chair of the Independent Football Regulator, says the commission’s decision raises “serious issues” and has confirmed that the IFR has powers to assess the suitability of individuals involved in running clubs.
Regulator will await Man City proceedings
In a statement highlighted by journalist Ben Jacobs, Kogan said the regulator could take account of findings made by football’s leagues when considering the suitability of owners, directors and executives.
“The independent commission’s decision raises serious issues,” Kogan said.
“The IFR has powers to assess the suitability of owners, directors and executives and we will use these powers where appropriate, in the interests of protecting the sustainability, honesty and integrity of English football where there is clear evidence of wrongdoing by individuals.”
Kogan’s statement doesn’t mean the regulator has opened a separate investigation into anyone at Man City. He made clear that the IFR will wait for further developments while proceedings between City and the Premier League remain ongoing.
“We hope it can be resolved quickly for the sake of fans,” he added. “For now, we have no further comment.”
The intervention introduces another possible consequence of the independent commission’s findings against City, but there is no indication yet that the IFR will exercise its suitability powers in this case.
City reject the commission’s findings and intend to appeal, with the club having until Friday to exercise that right.
