# Alex Greenwood Outlines Man City Champion Mindset

**City Women captain Alex Greenwood says winning once is not enough as her side begin the defence of their WSL title.**

The England defender captained City to a WSL and Women’s FA Cup double last season, their first league title in a decade, and has challenged her team-mates to do it again.

> “A true champion is someone who goes and wins again. A winner might be one-off. But a champion does it over and over.”
>
> For Greenwood, 32, that is the difference.

## Greenwood wants more from Man City Women

Greenwood succeeded Steph Houghton as City captain in 2024 and became only the second woman to lift the WSL trophy for the club last season.

Speaking in a wide-ranging [Sky Sports interview](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/13579874/man-city-vs-liverpool-why-graduating-from-wsl-winner-to-champion-is-so-important-to-alex-greenwood), she explained how Andree Jeglertz helped change the mentality of a side which had repeatedly gone close without winning the title. City spent much of last season at the top of the WSL before eventually finishing the job, then beat Brighton 4-0 at Wembley to add the Women’s FA Cup.

Greenwood believes Jeglertz’s willingness to listen to his players and allow them to challenge him has been important.

> “We remind each other we are winners, that fuels us to want to remain that. But we have huge respect for the level of opposition we face.”

It is something Greenwood has spoken about before. City’s players became increasingly comfortable talking about themselves as potential champions last season rather than shying away from the expectation. Now they have the trophies to prove it.

## Champions League return means plenty to Greenwood

City also return to the Women’s Champions League this season after missing out last year. Greenwood admits sitting at home watching European football was difficult.

> “I live for European nights. Do you know how hard it is to watch those games and not be involved?” She added: “We weren’t there last year and we have to use that feeling to our advantage. We cannot waste our opportunity.”
>
> City have started the new WSL season with successive victories, but Greenwood is already looking much further ahead.

She has lifted the league title and FA Cup as Manchester City Women captain. Her message now is simple enough: doing it once was winning; doing it again is what would make them champions.
