Five huge Man City wins over Norwich ahead of Carabao Cup reunion

City welcome Norwich to the Etihad in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night – opponents who have endured more than a few painful afternoons against the Blues over the years.

City face the Canaries in the third round at 7.30pm, four days after Sunday’s Manchester derby. History suggests goals have rarely been difficult to find in this fixture.

Five huge Man City wins over Norwich

Man City 7-0 Norwich – November 2013

The biggest of the lot. Manuel Pellegrini’s eventual Premier League champions were four up after 36 minutes, with David Silva, Matija Nastasic and Alvaro Negredo scoring after a Bradley Johnson own goal.

Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko added three more after the break as City recorded what was then their biggest Premier League victory.

Norwich 1-6 Man City – April 2012

A huge win during the run-in to City’s first Premier League title. Carlos Tevez scored a hat-trick, Sergio Aguero struck twice and Adam Johnson completed the scoring at Carrow Road as Roberto Mancini’s side moved to within two points of Manchester United. City would eventually win the title on goal difference.

Man City 5-1 Norwich – December 2011

Earlier in the same season, five different City players scored at the Etihad. Aguero, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson got the goals, with Steve Morison replying late for Norwich.

Man City 5-0 Norwich – July 2020

Norwich’s final game of the 2019/20 Premier League season also brought David Silva’s final league appearance for City. Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne put City two up before the break, with Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and De Bruyne again completing the scoring. De Bruyne also registered his 20th league assist of the season, equalling Thierry Henry’s Premier League record at the time.

Man City 5-0 Norwich – August 2021

Barely a year later, another five. Jack Grealish marked his home league debut with his first City goal, while Aymeric Laporte, Sterling and Mahrez also scored after a Tim Krul own goal had started the rout.

Norwich have had their moments against City too, most famously that remarkable 3-2 victory at Carrow Road in September 2019. But when this fixture has gone City’s way, it has occasionally done so rather spectacularly.

Thursday brings the clubs together for the first time since City won 4-0 at Carrow Road in February 2022.
