Manuel Akanji sends heartfelt message to Man City after three-year stay

Manuel Akanji

Manuel Akanji has looked back fondly on his three years at City after his successful spell in Manchester came to an end.

The Switzerland international’s move to Inter became permanent this summer following a season on loan in Italy. Akanji has now posted a message reflecting on his time at City, thanking his former teammates, coaches and staff.

“A special chapter to look back on,” he wrote. “Three amazing years filled with great moments, big achievements and friendships that go far beyond football.

“Thank you to the coach, all my teammates and the staff at Manchester City for everything. Always grateful for the journey. 🩵”

Not bad for three years

Akanji arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and went on to make 136 appearances for City. He collected seven major trophies along the way, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield.

His first season wasn’t a bad introduction. Akanji played 48 times as Pep Guardiola’s side won the Treble, starting both the FA Cup final against Manchester United and Champions League final against Inter.

There was rarely any fuss with Akanji, who played centre-back, full-back and wherever else Guardiola required him. More often than not, he looked comfortable.

Three years, 136 appearances and seven trophies is a decent return for a player City signed from Dortmund for around £15m. His description of it as a “special chapter” seems fair enough.
