February 2012: Agüero wins it late in Porto

The first meeting came in the last 32 of the Europa League, with Roberto Mancini’s City facing the competition’s defending champions.

Silvestre Varela put Porto ahead after 27 minutes before an Álvaro Pereira own goal levelled the game early in the second half.

Sergio Agüero then came off the bench to score from close range with five minutes remaining, giving City a 2-1 first-leg win.

February 2012: Four at the Etihad

Six days later, City finished the job emphatically.

Agüero scored inside the opening 20 seconds before Edin Džeko, David Silva and David Pizarro added three more in the final 15 minutes.

The 4-0 win sent City through 6-1 on aggregate, although the scoreline was a little harsh on Porto, who caused problems before their late collapse.

City went out to Sporting CP on away goals in the next round.

October 2020: Another City comeback

The clubs had to wait more than eight years for meeting number three.

Porto again scored first at the Etihad, this time through Luis Díaz in the opening game of the 2020/21 Champions League group stage.

Agüero equalised from the penalty spot before İlkay Gündoğan scored from a free-kick and substitute Ferran Torres made it 3-1.

December 2020: Goalless at the Dragão

The most recent meeting came six weeks later in Portugal.

City had already qualified for the knockout stages and a 0-0 draw secured top spot in Group C.

Gabriel Jesus thought he had scored a late winner, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for offside.

City went on to reach their first Champions League final that season – which was also played at the Estádio do Dragão – losing 1-0 to Chelsea.

City v Porto: Head-to-head record

Across the four competitive meetings, City have won three, drawn one and lost none, scoring nine goals and conceding two.

Tuesday will be City’s third competitive visit to the Dragão. The previous two produced a win and a draw.
