# Man City News & Talking Points: £458m rebuild, Fernández, O’Reilly and Coventry

**Two games, two wins and a transfer window unlike anything City have attempted before. Now Enzo Maresca has to make sense of it all.**

The transfer window may be closed, but there has been plenty to discuss around [City](https://readmancity.com/) on Thursday.

The scale of the summer spending has become clearer, Enzo Fernández has taken Kevin De Bruyne’s old shirt number and Nico O’Reilly has emerged as one of the less predictable stories of the opening two games.

And on Saturday, Coventry arrive at the Etihad for the first meeting between the clubs in 24 years.

Here’s our round-up of the day’s City news and talking points.

## What does City’s £458m summer really look like?

We started with the numbers.

Reuters put City’s total summer spending at approximately £458million, while around £280m was recouped through departures.

The Guardian’s calculation puts the net spend at approximately £175.7m.

Our [deep dive into City’s summer finances](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/man-city-net-spend-scr-summer-finances/) looked beyond the headline figures at transfer accounting, City’s record of generating money from player sales and the financial regulations now facing [Premier League](https://readmancity.com/tag/premier-league/) clubs.

PSR has been replaced for 2026/27 by the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio system, alongside the Sustainability and Systemic Resilience rules.

City must also comply with UEFA’s 70% Squad Cost Rule while competing in Europe.

It was an extraordinary summer of spending. The eventual cost to City’s accounts cannot simply be calculated by subtracting sales from purchases.

## Who has gained from the rebuild?

Maresca’s squad looks very different from the one that began the summer.

Rodri, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Savinho, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico González are among those to have gone, while Fernández, Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, [Iliman Ndiaye](https://readmancity.com/2026/08/28/man-city-iliman-ndiaye-everton-80m-offer/) and Allan Elias are among the arrivals.

Some of those already at the club have made encouraging starts.

Our look at [City’s winners and losers from the transfer window](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/man-city-winners-losers-transfer-window/) picked out Rayan Cherki, O’Reilly, Anderson and Antoine Semenyo.

Mateo Kovačić suddenly has even more competition for Premier League starts, while Jérémy Doku will return from injury to a very crowded attacking group.

Maresca has plenty to choose from.

## £327m spent – and O’Reilly is still starting

One of the less glamorous stories of City’s opening fortnight concerns O’Reilly.

Anderson cost a reported £116m, Bouaddi £86m and Fernández another £125m.

Yet the academy graduate has started both Premier League games.

As we looked at in our piece on [O’Reilly keeping his place despite City’s £327m midfield spending](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/nico-oreilly-man-city-midfield-327m-spend/), two games guarantees him nothing.

Fernández is still to make his debut and Bouaddi has already appeared from the bench.

O’Reilly could quite easily be left out against Coventry.

For now, though, he has started twice and City have won twice.

## Fernández takes De Bruyne’s No.17

Fernández completed his move from Chelsea on Deadline Day and has taken the No.17 shirt previously worn by Kevin De Bruyne.

The number has some history for Fernández himself.

He wore 17 early in his Argentina career and explained after joining City that it was a number he liked.

We looked at [Fernández taking City’s No.17 shirt](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/enzo-fernandez-man-city-shirt-number-17-de-bruyne/) and the inevitable attention that will accompany it.

The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract and is reunited with Maresca after their time together at Chelsea.

Whether Saturday brings his debut is now one of the selection questions ahead of Coventry.

## Haaland is finding his range

[Erling Haaland](https://readmancity.com/2026/08/29/erling-haaland-man-city-admission-enzo-maresca-palace/) didn’t score against Bournemouth.

He made up for it at Selhurst Park.

The striker scored twice in City’s 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace and his early shooting numbers are already eye-catching.

Our piece on [the two Premier League numbers behind Haaland’s start](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/erling-haaland-premier-league-stats-man-city/) highlighted his nine shots from inside the penalty area and five efforts on target – both league-leading figures at the time of publication.

It is a tiny sample after only two matches.

But Haaland is getting chances.

## Gallagher makes his Cherki choice

Noel Gallagher also had his say on Maresca’s new-look squad.

The lifelong City supporter has been impressed by the Fernández signing but singled out Cherki for particular praise.

Gallagher described him as an “absolute diamond” and said City should build the team around the Frenchman.

We covered [Gallagher’s verdict on Cherki](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/noel-gallagher-rayan-cherki-maresca-man-city/) earlier in the day.

Cherki has started with two assists against Bournemouth and two goals at Crystal Palace.

Gallagher clearly doesn’t need much more convincing.

## From Maine Road to Maresca

Finally, a trip back a little further than this summer.

Coventry visit the Etihad on Saturday for the first meeting between the clubs since March 2002.

Kevin Keegan was City’s manager then, Maine Road was still home and both clubs were playing in the second tier.

Darren Huckerby and Danny Tiatto scored before Shaun Wright-Phillips added two in a 4-2 City victory.

Our look at [City’s 24-year Coventry reunion](https://readmancity.com/2026/09/03/man-city-coventry-first-meeting-24-years/) also uncovered an old top-flight sequence.

City haven’t beaten Coventry at this level since March 1993, drawing four and losing four of the eight meetings that followed.

The last of those was in January 2001.

Not much relevance to what happens on Saturday, perhaps, but a reminder of how long this fixture has been away.

## Next up: Coventry

City have six points from six after beating Bournemouth 2-1 and Crystal Palace 4-1.

Now Maresca has Fernández and Ndiaye available to add to a squad that was already winning without them.

Coventry arrive at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon.

After a summer dominated by transfer fees, departures and speculation, Maresca can get on with the job of deciding what his new City should look like.
