# From Maine Road to Maresca – City’s Coventry reunion has been 24 years in the making

This update reflects the position as of 2 October 2026. Manchester City host Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend. The Man City Coventry Etihad meeting will be the first competitive fixture between the two clubs since March 2002. Enzo Maresca’s side go into it in excellent early season form.

Coventry have never set foot inside the Etihad Stadium. The ground did not exist when the clubs last met. For City supporters, the fixture is a reminder of how far both clubs have travelled since 2002.

## A historic fixture returns after 24 years

Manchester City last played Coventry City in March 2002. City won 4-2 at Maine Road. That match came in the second tier, with both clubs chasing a route back to the top flight. City went on to win promotion that season.

The sides have not met in any competition since. City’s record against Coventry in the top flight makes the gap feel even longer. Manchester City have not beaten Coventry City in a top-flight league fixture since March 1993, a run stretching back more than three decades.

Much has changed since that night at Maine Road. Manchester City’s squad has turned over many times, including the striker business covered in [our earlier report](https://readmancity.com/2015/01/18/wilfried-bony-a-refreshing-piece-of-business/). Coventry, by contrast, have spent much of the intervening period outside the Premier League altogether.

## Why Coventry City have never played at the Etihad Stadium

Coventry City have never played a fixture at the Etihad Stadium. The reason is simple timing. The stadium opened in 2003, a year after the two clubs’ last meeting at Maine Road, so no fixture between them has ever fallen there.

The two clubs have not met since, so that gap has never closed. This weekend’s match ends the wait. It gives Coventry supporters their first look at the stadium in a competitive City fixture.

## What happens next

Enzo Maresca’s start to the season has been perfect so far. Manchester City have won both of their opening two Premier League fixtures, giving the manager a strong early platform to build on.

The Man City Coventry Etihad meeting gives Maresca the chance to extend that run against a side City have historically struggled to beat in the league.
