City didn’t become the most suffocating side in English football because of the strikers up top. Somebody must make that happen first.
Trophy after trophy, European night after European night, there’s almost always been a midfielder pulling the strings behind the headline. Guardiola built his entire City project around controlling that space between the boxes, and the eras before him leaned on the middle of the park too, just with a lot more elbows and a lot less patience.
Matchday odds now reflect that obsession. Scroll through the markets on any odds guaranteed betting sites before a City derby and entire sections are built around who wins the midfield battle before kick-off even happens, sometimes before either manager has finalised a lineup. Picking City’s three greatest midfielders from a squad list this deep isn’t easy, and honestly, arguing about it is half the fun. But three names keep coming up more than any others, with a few more worth mentioning further down.
Kevin De Bruyne
Ten years at the Etihad. Six Premier League titles. A passing range so wide it basically forced Guardiola to redesign attacking patterns around getting him the ball thirty yards from goal, angled slightly left, always with time to think. Kevin De Bruyne didn’t just fit the system, he became the reason the system worked at all.
He wasn’t only there to assist, either. Thirty-two goals in a single Premier League campaign from a deep-lying midfielder doesn’t happen by chance, and neither does setting up a Champions League final winner on a torn meniscus, which is what he somehow pulled off in Istanbul back in 2023. Half fit, barely able to run, and he still found the pass. Take him out of City’s last decade and you’re left with a much more ordinary club, one that probably wins half as many finals.
David Silva
Before De Bruyne, there was David Silva, and City fans over thirty will tell you he’s the one who taught this club how to play. Valencia sold him in 2010 for what looks like pocket change now. Silva never shouted for the ball, never waved his arms about, he just found pockets of space nobody else saw and made defenders look slow doing it.
Four Premier League titles later, it’s fair to say Guardiola’s whole philosophy clicked into gear so quickly because he’d inherited a player who already understood it instinctively, without needing three years of coaching to get there. Over sixty league goals, close to a hundred assists, a nickname, El Mago, that stuck for good reason. Ask anyone who watched City in the early 2010s who the best midfielder was, and more than a few will still say Silva, not De Bruyne. Old habits, and all that.
Yaya Touré
Comparing Yaya Touré to Silva or De Bruyne almost feels unfair to both sides of the argument. Less about the final pass, more about sheer physical inevitability, he had a habit of shrugging off two players near the halfway line and still arriving at the box in time to finish it himself.
Twenty goals from central midfield in the 2013/14 season. Read that again. That tally alone should be framed somewhere inside the Etihad, and his performances across both the 2012 and 2014 title wins tipped City from nearly-champions to actual champions. No other midfielder in the club’s history has combined goals and force quite like he did during that stretch.
Honourable Mentions
There’s room for more names than most articles admit. Colin Bell, nicknamed Nijinsky for a stamina that never seemed to run out, was doing all this decades before Abu Dhabi money ever entered the picture, and older fans will still argue he’s the best pure footballer this club has produced. Fernandinho spent a decade holding the middle together without asking for a single headline. Ilkay Gündogan’s stoppage-time goals during the 2018/19 treble deserve their own paragraph, frankly. And Rodri, fresh off a Ballon d’Or in 2024 after an impressive 2023/24 campaign, is closing in fast, injuries allowing.
Ask five different City supporters to rank these three and you’ll get five different answers, which, honestly, is exactly how it should be.
