# Opta includes Matheus Nunes and two other Man City players in team of the season

- Opta selects Premier League team of the season
- Matheus Nunes recognised for top performances
- Two other Man City players included as well

**Opta have named their Premier League team of the season, and Manchester City have the joint highest number of players included.**

At one stage it really looked like Man City were going to win the Premier League, with the possibility of winning a domestic treble even on the cards.

The Citizens trailed Arsenal for much of the season, but defeated them in a closely contested battle at the Etihad Stadium.

City moved top of the league after defeating Burnley. However, a slip-up against Everton proved fatal, as the Gunners were crowned champions.

Having the campaign end that way was certainly disappointing, but there are still plenty of positives to take from it.

## Three Man City players named in Opta team of the year

According to [Opta](https://x.com/OptaAnalyst/status/2058879929824034884?s=20), there were three City players who stood out across the season, one of whom was Matheus Nunes.

The Portuguese star has been named in their team of the season, where players are selected based on data analysis.

Rayan Cherki has also made the cut, after showcasing the type of flair the Premier League has been missing for far too long.

Finally, it should not be surprising to discover Erling Haaland’s place up front, after he received a third golden boot.

## Nunes has been immense for Man City

The right-back position became a problem for the Citizens after Kyle Walker’s departure, but Nunes has walked into the role like he owns it.

Despite usually operating as a midfielder, the 27-year-old has slotted in so naturally, you would think it was where he has always played.

Nunes is a solid defender, who is very good at dealing with one-on-one situations. Additionally, he is not bad in the forward areas either, registering eight goal contributions this season.

## City might not need a new right-back

Earlier this year it was reported that [Tino Livramento could join Man City](https://readmancity.com/2026/03/09/tino-livramentos-manchester-city-move-nailed-on-reports-former-chief-executive/) this summer, as either a challenger or replacement for Nunes.

However, the Portugal international will surely continue to be used as a right-back, and so the most likely signing would be to find him an understudy.

Still, City already have Rico Lewis, who has shown potential despite rarely featuring this season under Pep Guardiola.

But if the new manager is keen on both Nunes and Lewis, it could be that this area of the squad remains untouched during the transfer window.
