# Man City news today: Pep Guardiola press conference, FA Cup final build-up and more

## Man City agree terms with Troyes for Mathys Detourbet

It was reported last month that [Man City agreed a £13m fee to sign Mathys Detourbet](https://readmancity.com/2026/04/18/man-city-agree-eight-figure-fee-for-promising-french-winger-to-link-up-with-rayan-cherki/), but new information has since been revealed.

The actual figure agreed is £21.7m according to RMC Sport journalist [Fabrice Hawkins](https://x.com/FabriceHawkins/status/2055286815641210997), with bonuses included.

Should Detourbet agree to the move, he will join Monaco on a season-long loan, which could be extended by a further year.

## Pep Guardiola is only looking forwards ahead of the FA Cup final

Asked about the past two FA Cup finals in his [pre-match press conference](https://www.youtube.com/live/tEo-EG72hp8?si=Mz9tqOsQclt2__eg), Guardiola was quick to change the subject to this season.

The City boss pointed out that his squad is not the same as recent years, with new players coming in to compete in the final for the very first time.

He said: “New players and it is forgotten. One off game against Chelsea, in another final we have to try and win the trophy.

On last year’s final, Guardiola added: “I congratulate Crystal Palace and I still congratulate them. It is in the past.”

## Mateo Kovacic highlights Chelsea’s fighting spirit

City are tasked with beating Chelsea at Wembley, which should not be too difficult a task on paper, considering how the Blues have been performing.

Nevertheless, Kovacic knows that his old club are always competing for silverware, so he is anticipating a tricky game.

“It’s a dangerous team \[Chelsea\] with young, young amazing players, so it will be tough,” Kovacic told [Stan Sport](https://x.com/StanSportFC/status/2054849201448624388).

On fighting for the FA Cup, he said: “Unbelievable. I haven’t won it yet, but I hope this time we can manage to win it because it’s really such an amazing trophy and so many clubs are involved. So it’s a beautiful competition.”

Turning his attention back to Man City’s opponent, Kovacic added: “You kind of expect from Chelsea that it doesn’t matter how the season goes, they always fight for some trophies and this season is the same.

“They’re again in a final, so it’s a dangerous team, but I think we have the experience as well as a good mixture of young and older players.

“But of course, it’s one game so you never know what can happen. But we will be prepared for sure to have a good game.”

## Bernardo Silva issues FA Cup final warning to Man City

Public opinion on which team should be winning is not everything. After all, Bernardo Silva has pointed out that Arsenal were favourites to lift the Carabao Cup.

However, Man City dug deep and claimed a 2-0 victory. And now, they must ensure Chelsea do not repeat their own accomplishment.

Silva told [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7280461/2026/05/15/bernardo-silva-manchester-city-arsenal-guardiola-interview/?source=user_shared_article&unlocked_article_code=1.ilA.w_Ue.asG3NmL1uHJe): “We know how tough the challenge is. Chelsea haven’t been in a very good moment, but finals are finals.

“When we played the Carabao Cup final, everyone said Arsenal were favourites and I kept saying, ‘That’s not important. A final is one game, 90 minutes, and anything can happen’.

“If you look at Chelsea, you can’t deny they have fantastic players. On a good day, they’re very difficult to beat, so we expect a very tough game. But we’re also expecting our players to show up and to deliver,” he continued.

“The nine years \[at Man City\] have been amazing. It would be lovely to finish with a couple more titles. I want to end on a good note.”

## Joleon Lescott defends Pep Guardiola’s legacy

There are no guarantees in football, so it is still possible that Man City will end up losing to Chelsea on Saturday, before falling short to the Gunners.

This would be a huge blow for Guardiola in what could be his [last season at City](https://readmancity.com/2026/05/14/pep-guardiola-set-to-lose-two-man-city-coaches-this-summer-prompting-exit-rumours/). However, ex-Citizen Joleon Lescott reckons this will have no effect on the legacy he will leave behind.

“We’re talking a lot about his legacy today and I don’t think his legacy will be tarnished if they don’t win the Premier League or the FA Cup at the end of this season,” the former defender told [Hayters TV](https://x.com/HaytersTV/status/2054955227426525202).

“I think his legacy is far greater than Man City to be honest. I think his legacy that he’s left and his impact that he’s had on English football is huge throughout the football pyramid.

“Pep’s influences on coaches and the football in general is far greater than we’ve realised. And yes he’s been outstanding for Man City, but I think he can take a lot of pride in what he’s done for the g

## Erling Haaland details what Phil Foden told him

Back in 2021, Foden scored a last minute goal to hand City a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The duo appeared to be in deep conversation after the game, and Haaland has just revealed what they were talking about.

He told [Man City](https://x.com/ManCity/status/2054954899276771518): “What Phil said was you should come and join me at City and that’s what he said. And yeah, he was right about it, I have to say. It’s funny to look back on it.”

## Gabriel Agbonlahor criticised Man City’s fanbase

Addressing apparent empty seats at the Etihad, ex-Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor had some words of criticism for Man City fans.

He was able to sympathise with how many matches they pay to attend, but he was unable to look past the sea of sky blues on display.

> 👀 Andy: "Gabby, a number of empty seats and changes. Were they a sign that fans have given up on the title?"\
> \

Asked if this was a sign that the supporters had given up on the title, Agbonlahor replied: “No, it’s a sign that they’ve not got a strong fanbase.

I get it, they’re looking at maybe paying for their FA Cup tickets. So many games City have a season, I get it. But I think other clubs sell out no matter what with a bigger fanbase.”
