With Ederson taken off at half-time with a minor muscle issue and Claudio Bravo sent off, Manchester City had to put Kyle Walker in goal for the closing stages of their 1-1 Champions League draw with Atalanta and that got us thinking about some other times when outfield players had to play in goal. Here’s a look at some

Phil Jagielka vs Arsenal - December 2006
When he was the manager at Sheffield United, Neil Warnock didn’t have a goalkeeper on his bench, such was his confidence in using Phil Jagielka as a goalkeeper if needed. In December 2006, Jagielka had to go in goal for half an hour against Arsenal after Paddy Kenny’s injury. He kept a clean sheet and the Blades won 1-0.

Harry Kane vs Asteras Tripolis FC - October 2014
In a Europa League game in 2014, Harry Kane had an eventful day! He scored a hat-trick as Spurs went 5-0 up, but he had to play in goal for the final few minutes when Hugo Lloris was sent off and conceded from the first shot he faced as he let Jeronimo Barrales’ rather tame free-kick squirm under his body and into the goal.

John Terry vs Reading - October 2006
When Petr Cech suffered a horrendous head injury against Reading in 2006, Carlo Cudicini came on to replace him. However, in the second half, Cudicini was knocked out after a collision with Ibrahima Sonko and John Terry had to go in goal for about ten minutes. He kept a clean sheet and Chelsea won 1-0.

Jose Enrique vs Newcastle - April 2012
Liverpool full-back Jose Enrique had to go in goal against his former club Newcastle for around eight minutes after Pepe Reina was sent off. The Magpies were 2-0 up at the time and that’s how the game ended.

Carl Jenkinson vs Leicester - August 2015
West Ham defender Carl Jenkinson had to go in goal for the closing minutes of West Ham’s league game with Leicester in 2015 after Adrian was sent off for a challenge on Jamie Vardy after he went up for a corner in stoppage time.

Henri Lansbury vs Blackpool - February 2012
West Ham earned a convincing 4-1 win over Blackpool in the Championship, despite having to play with Henri Lansbury in goal for over 35 minutes after Robert Green was sent off for a foul on Roman Bednar.

Cosmin Moti vs Steaua Bucuresti - August 2014
Ludogorets defender Cosmin Moti was forced to go in goal against Steaua Bucuresti for the final few minutes of extra-time and the penalty shootout in a Champions League qualifier. Moti then scored his own spot-kick and then saved two penalties to put Ludogorets into the group stages for the first time.

Rio Ferdinand vs Portsmouth - March 2008
In Man United’s FA Cup clash with Portsmouth in 2008, Tomasz Kuszczak came on for the injured Edwin van der Saar, but he was sent off when he conceded a penalty. Rio Ferdinand went in goal for that penalty but he was unable to save Sulley Muntari’s spot-kick and Pompey knocked United out.

Rodrigo Palacio vs Hellas - December 2012
Inter Milan forward Rodrigo Palacio put on quite aa show when he was forced to go in goal during a cup game against Hellas. The Argentine had to go in goal for the final 16 minutes of the game after an injury to Luca Castellazzi. He made two excellent saves to keep a clean sheet and Inter won 2-0.

John O'Shea vs Tottenham - February 2007
When Edwin van der Sar broke his nose against Tottenham, John O’Shea was forced to take the gloves. He kept a clean sheet as United won 4-0.
