Manchester City did not win the league when they beat Manchester United on Friday night. It was a great step towards the title but the situation remains the same for both teams, they have 3 massive games that they both need to win in order to win the league.
Burnley away is a very tough fixture because Sean Dyche always has a team that is willing to fight, their recent run of form and points secured at Chelsea shows that they are not a pushover.
Pep Guardiola lost Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho to injury in the past week and they will be a huge loss if they are unable to play any of the remaining games. Fernandinho might make the game against Burnley and in Pep’s press conference there was no news about any other injuries.
After being knocked out of the Champions League, Man City have the rare chance for a weeks rest before their game against Leicester. Therefore, I predict that the Man City team will be as strong as possible.
Here’s how I think that Man City will start against Burnley:
Ederson was named in the PFA team of the season earlier in the week, as a Man City fan I know Ederson is so important to this Man City side and thus the place was deserved. After another top performance against Man United, he will be in line to start once more against Burnley.
RB: Kyle Walker
Kyle Walker has played a huge amount of football this season, especially when the world cup is added on. This could well be Danilo, who deserves his place, but with a week to rest Kyle Walker will probably start.
CB: Nicolas Otamendi
Pep Guardiola mentioned in his press conference earlier that he played Vincent Kompany against Man United for the long ball game. Burnley will play the same way therefore Nicolas Otamendi is suited for the aerial battle.
CB: Aymeric Laporte
Aymeric Laporte, like Kyle Walker, has featured heavily in this Man City side this season. John Stones was left out of the squad in the week, perhaps he could be inline for a start but Aymeric Laporte is so important and is almost undroppable.
LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko
Oleksandr Zinchenko had a nervy first half but he came into his own in the second half. If Benjamin Mendy is fit, he might be used because he provides a more attacking presence required to break the Burnley block. However, I think that the Ukrainian will play because he has had more time under Pep Guardiola.
CDM: Ilkay Gundogan
Fernandinho might be fit, but even if he is fit I predict that Ilkay Gundogan will play anyway. He has really come into his own in the ‘6’ position and his key passing could be important in unlocking the Burnley block.
CM: Bernardo Silva
Bernardo Silva was outstanding in the second half, playing both on the right wing and down the middle. The injuries to both Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho means that Man City have the two Silva’s and Phil Foden. Phil Foden did play at home to Tottenham so Guardiola is not afraid to use him, but Burnley away screams experience.
CM: David Silva
David Silva threw back the years with his performance at Old Trafford. He has struggled for form in 2019 but it was a performance that Man City fans recognise and love about David Silva. He will very important if Man City are able to win the league, especially with the loss of Kevin De Bruyne.
RW: Raheem Sterling
Raheem Sterling missed an absolute sitter at Burnley last season and it could have haunted his season but he has been able to kick on and be even more impressive this season. Raheem Sterling may not have scored against United but his run was still so important and the same will be required.
LW: Leroy Sané
This is a difficult pick because Pep Guardiola also said in his press conference that he likes to play Leroy Sané against sides that press high. Burnley do not do that, so perhaps Riyad Mahrez may be deployed with Raheem Sterling but after Sane’s goal, it might be time to give him a chance.
ST: Sergio Aguero
Gabriel Jesus has been left in the cold for a little while making cameo appearances for a few games now, he always looks full of energy. However, Sergio Aguero is just a cut above and when he is fit, he must play because he adds that little extra quality.
