Manchester City are set to support Pep Guardiola in his bid to successfully defend the Premier League crown for the first time since 2009.
With the supposed “bottom-less” chest well used in this year’s title winning campaign, attention is already turning to how City may expand the squad further this summer.
As the Daily Mail report £100 million at least will be invested in the transfer window, it seems Pep has his pick of the world’s best and brightest footballers.
Guardiola himself said:
It’s not a dynasty,
It’s just one title. We’re super happy but there’s still so much work to be done before this squad’s full potential is unlocked.
With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at some of the signings Manchester City could make this summer:
1. Thiago Alcantara
Thiago was a favourite of Guardiola at Barcelona, to such an extent that he signed him again when he moved to Bayern Munich.
Now, it seems a £50m for the midfielder may be a matter of “when” rather than “if”.
2. Fred
Not “that” Fred, but there’s a new one now. This Brazilian is an incredibly skilful midfielder playing with Shakhtar Donetsk, and is attracting a fair amount of interest from clubs all over Europe prior to the opening of the transfer window.
3. Riyad Mahrez
The Leicester star very nearly secured his move in January, but could make sure of his graduation from the 2015/16 title-winning side this summer.
4. Kostas Manolas
With City’s centre backs at time exposed during the dreadful seven days that brought them three defeats, an upgrade at the position should perhaps be expected. The Greek Manolas has been something of a hero for Roma this season, not least for his header sending the club through to the Champions League semi finals, completing an astonishing comeback against Barcelona.
5. Jose Gimenez
Or alternatively, Guardiola may head back to his native country to prise the gem from Diego Simeone’s defence. Gimenez is still young (23), and could find a home alongside Aymeric Laporte for years to come.
6. Gonzalo Higuain
One thing City have lacked this year is an aerial presence up front. Higuain could provide just that, in addition to his supreme contributions in build-up play.
7. Mauro Icardi
Alternatively, Mauro Icardi could provide the versatile option Pep is looking for. The 25-year-old would almost certainly come at a cheaper price than Higuain, as well.
