Well that was underwhelming wasn’t it? All that anticipation and excitement was rendered as pointless following a pretty turgid performance, in which we failed to cause any sort of discomfort or havoc in a Real Madrid defence that, you feel, was there for the taking.
Ultimately, it needed only a deflected Gareth Bale cross to seal City’s fate, although it could have been a wider margin of victory for Real if truth be told. Whilst we were always in the game, we seemed to lack the vigour or urgency to turn the tide in our favour. Real were in control throughout, and although City reduced them to few clear cut chances, they were by far the most likely to trouble the scorers again.
Defensively, we were relatively solid throughout both legs, however the distinct lack of creativity will be a significant cause for concern. Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne cut frustrated figures last night as they were suffocated out of the game.
Here we take a look in some greater detail at four of the reasons why it just wasn’t to be for City this year in the Champions League.
