Manchester City forward Wilfried Bony has reiterated his displeasure to find himself on the bench for the vast majority of City’s games due to the return of key man Sergio Aguero but has insisted that he is happy to put the team ahead of himself.
Bony’s happiness at the club was recently questioned after the Ivory Coast international voiced his frustration at manager Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to start an unfit Aguero ahead of him in City’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders Arsenal two weeks ago.
Although the powerful forward has not been happy with his limited chances since the return of Aguero from his injury, Bony has started nine of City’s last 16 games during the spell in which he has scored a fairly underwhelming four goals.
As I said at the time, everybody wants to play, you ask all the players on the bench, they want to play, none of them want to sit on the bench. But the coach has to choose 11 players. So when we come in we need to do our maximum, that’s all I said there. I was not disappointed.
As a striker, when you start to play and start to score your confidence gets back and it is good. But sometimes the coach has to make a decision, and yes you may not be happy about it, but it is good for the team.
Despite his frustration at a lack of playing time, Bony admitted that when he is given chances he has to do more to take them and make an impression for Pellegrini.
As I said, nobody on the bench will say they are happy, but it is more important to do your maximum when you come in and show them you can do better.
The 27-year-old will be looking to add to his tally for the season as City prepare to face Watford on Saturday.
