# Richards a McLaren target?

Micah Richards could be one of the first signings for Steve McLaren at Newcastle United according to the Star, with the former Derby County boss a big admirer of the defender, who looks certain to leave The Etihad after fourteen years with the club, with his contract expiring this summer.

Richards has been linked with moves to Newcastle a number of times in previous windows, and looked close to completing a move on at least one occasion, but nothing ever came of it and with each passing window he remained in sky blue. He’s spent this season at Fiorentina, but with his deal at The Blues expiring at the end of June, there’s been a lot of speculation about his future.

McLaren is allegedly a big fan of the 26-year-old, with 11 of the defender’s 13 England caps coming under the soon-to-be Newcastle manager. Since McLaren left his post as England manager in 2007, Richards has struggled for a place in the squad, as a result of a number of factors.

If the City defender does end up moving to St. James’ Park, he may be a replacement for Daryl Janmaat whose future seems uncertain with The Magpies.

Regardless of where he moves, Richards will go down in the memories of many City fans, as one of the best servants to the club in recent years. He may have been overshadowed by Pablo Zabaleta, but his contribution won’t go unacknowledged.
