Guehi and O’Reilly punished for England errors against Spain

Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly both saw mistakes punished by Spain during a mixed night for City’s England contingent at Wembley.

Elliot Anderson joined the pair in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI, giving Man City three players in the side against the world champions. For Guehi, the difficult moment arrived almost immediately.

Guehi punished for early mistake

Less than two minutes had been played when Guehi was caught in possession close to his own penalty area. The City defender turned back towards goal but was dispossessed by Lamine Yamal, who finished past James Trafford to put Spain ahead.

Guehi recovered from that early setback and remained on the pitch until the 89th minute, when he was replaced by Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. O’Reilly’s evening contained considerably more at the other end.

The City youngster broke down the left before delivering the cross from which Harry Kane put England ahead shortly before half-time, with the ball going in via Spain defender Marc Cucurella.

O’Reilly error punished by Baena

O’Reilly was involved again when Spain drew level on the hour, this time for the wrong reason. A misplaced pass inside his own half handed possession back to Spain, who moved the ball quickly to Alex Baena. The substitute created room on the edge of the penalty area before finding the net.

O’Reilly completed the full 90 minutes despite that setback, while Anderson also played the entire game. All three City starters were booked, with O’Reilly shown a yellow card in the 67th minute and Guehi following two minutes later.

For O’Reilly in particular, there was plenty packed into the evening: a major part in an England goal, a mistake punished at the other end and another full senior international appearance. England travel to Prague to face Czechia on Tuesday, when City’s trio could be involved again.
