Meet our opponents: Everything you need to know about Coventry City

Coventry City are back in the Premier League after 25 years away and today provide the opposition as City look to make it three wins from three.

Frank Lampard’s side arrive at the Etihad without a point or a league goal so far, but those opening numbers tell only part of the story.

For the first edition of our new Meet our opponents feature, here is everything City supporters need to know about today’s visitors.

How did Coventry get here?

Lampard took charge in November 2024 and initially led Coventry into the Championship play-offs before going one better last season.

They did it emphatically.

Coventry won the Championship with 95 points, finishing 11 clear at the top after winning 28 of their 46 games. Their 97 goals also made them the highest-scoring side across England’s top four divisions.

It has been a difficult return. A 3-0 opening-night defeat at champions Arsenal was followed by a 1-0 home loss to fellow promoted side Hull.

They did, however, beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the Carabao Cup.

Who is in charge?

Lampard needs little introduction at the Etihad.

The former Chelsea midfielder spent the 2014/15 season with City towards the end of his playing career before moving to New York City.

His managerial career has been more uneven, with spells at Derby County, Chelsea and Everton, but his work at Coventry has rebuilt his reputation.

Coventry have predominantly used a 4-2-3-1 this season, and Lampard has not abandoned the desire to play. They have averaged more than 460 passes across their opening two league games, although turning possession into chances has proved difficult.

What changed this summer?

Quite a lot.

Coventry strengthened heavily after promotion, adding Premier League experience alongside younger players with room to develop.

Frank Onyeka has also arrived from Brentford, while young City defender Stephen Mfuni joined on loan.

Who should City watch?

One player City won’t have to worry about today is Haji Wright.

The USA international was a major part of Coventry’s promotion campaign, scoring 17 Championship goals last season, but he is currently sidelined with a thigh injury and is not expected back until later in the autumn.

His absence leaves Lampard looking elsewhere for goals. Taiwo Awoniyi brings plenty of Premier League experience and a physical presence up front, while Loum Tchaouna offers pace and directness from wide areas.

Gustavo Hamer is another obvious name to watch. The midfielder is back at a club where he was hugely popular during his first spell and gives Coventry creativity and personality in the middle of the pitch.

Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante provide Lampard with further attacking options, but Wright’s absence is significant for a team still searching for its first Premier League goal of the season.

The early numbers suggest Coventry are still adjusting to the level. They have managed only 15 shots and around 1.5 expected goals across their opening two league matches.

Yet this was a side which scored 97 times last season, and they have added considerably to that promotion-winning squad.

City will be expected to win today. Coventry’s job will be to make sure it isn’t quite as straightforward as it looks.
