Virgil van Dijk has made his feelings clear over Cody Gakpo’s future as City push to bring the Liverpool forward to the Etihad Stadium.
City have opened talks with Liverpool over the 27-year-old, who is understood to favour a move to Manchester if he leaves Anfield before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
An opening offer has also reportedly been made, but Liverpool captain Van Dijk would rather his Netherlands team-mate stayed exactly where he is.
“He’s a quality player and I think we should keep quality players, but let’s see what the next three days bring,” said Van Dijk.
“Obviously it’s pretty clear that I want him to stay, not only because he is the quality player that he is, but also [because] he’s a friend of mine and I think he will be very important for us.”
Gakpo decision moves closer
Liverpool’s own transfer business adds another layer to the story.
The Reds have agreed a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, potentially giving them greater freedom to consider City’s approach for Gakpo.
City’s interest has moved quickly. Formal contact with Liverpool was made on Saturday, while discussions over personal terms have also taken place.
Gakpo’s preference could prove significant if Liverpool decide they are prepared to sell, although there is no agreement between the clubs yet.
Van Dijk clearly hopes it does not reach that point.
