Enzo Fernandez now 1/6 to join City as deadline closes in

Enzo Fernandez is now as short as 1/6 to become a City player before the transfer window closes, despite Chelsea and City still having no agreement over a fee.

The Argentina international’s price has fallen sharply during August as talk of a move to the Etihad Stadium has intensified.

Bookies.com had Fernandez at 1/6 to join City over the weekend. In simple terms, those odds carry an implied probability of around 86 per cent.

It is not a prediction that the deal is 86 per cent certain to happen. Transfer markets can be volatile, particularly in the final days of a window.

The change over the course of August is nevertheless striking.

Fernandez was available at 6/1 to join City earlier in the month. That price shortened substantially as City’s interest became clearer, with Oddschecker reporting 1/3 last Wednesday before the latest 1/6 price emerged.

Short odds but no deal yet

For all that movement, City still need to find a deal Chelsea will accept.

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Chelsea are prepared to sell Fernandez for the right price, having valued the midfielder at around £120million.

The 25-year-old has since missed Chelsea’s last two matchday squads, including Sunday’s 4-3 win over Brighton.

Fernandez is reported to be open to joining City, but that only solves one part of the equation.

Until City and Chelsea agree a fee, the bookmakers can shorten the odds as much as they like.

With Tuesday’s deadline approaching, 1/6 is certainly a statement of where the market thinks Fernandez will end up. Whether City now turn that expectation into a transfer is another matter.
