Chelsea have progressed talks over Lamine Camara as City continue working on a deal for Enzo Fernandez ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Graeme Bailey reports for TEAMtalk that Chelsea have moved forward in discussions for the Monaco midfielder, with Camara being considered as the club plan for the possibility of Fernandez leaving Stamford Bridge.
City’s interest in the Argentina international is well established, while Fernandez is understood to be open to the move.
There is still no agreement between the clubs.
Chelsea have valued Fernandez at around £120m, and City would need to find common ground with them before a transfer can happen.
Chelsea making plans in midfield
Xabi Alonso left Fernandez out of his squad for Saturday’s 4-3 defeat to Brighton, having also omitted the midfielder from Chelsea’s previous game.
Asked about his future afterwards, Alonso said the club were “preparing for all scenarios”.
Sky Sports has previously reported that Chelsea want another midfielder lined up before allowing Fernandez to leave.
Camara is now firmly in that conversation.
The 22-year-old Senegal international has been with Monaco since joining from Metz in 2024 and Chelsea’s talks over a possible deal have progressed.
That does not mean Fernandez has been sold, nor does it mean Chelsea have accepted City’s terms.
But there is a clear difference between speculation over a replacement and Chelsea actually holding talks for one.
City still need to do the difficult part and agree a deal for Fernandez. Chelsea, meanwhile, appear to be preparing for the possibility that they will.
