Crystal Palace v Man City: The history, records and memorable meetings

  • City lead the overall head-to-head after 76 competitive meetings
  • Palace have not beaten City at Selhurst Park since April 2015
  • The Eagles produced the biggest result of all at Wembley in 2025

City return to Selhurst Park on Friday, with team news and TV details for Crystal Palace v Man City confirmed ahead of the 8pm kick-off.

The clubs first met more than a century ago and have since faced each other in the top flight, the old Second Division and domestic cups.

City have comfortably had the better of the overall record.

Palace, though, have occasionally found a way to disrupt them – most memorably on an afternoon at Wembley that became one of the biggest days in the south London club’s history.

Crystal Palace v Man City – the overall record

Across all competitions, City and Palace have met 76 times.

Their first competitive meeting came in the FA Cup in January 1921, when Palace won 2-0.

Five years later came a result that still jumps off the page.

City beat Palace 11-4 at Maine Road in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February 1926.

It remains the biggest scoreline in the history of the fixture.

Meetings became more regular from the 1960s onwards, with the clubs facing each other in both of English football’s top two divisions.

City’s long unbeaten run at Selhurst Park

For City, the recent away record is particularly strong.

Palace’s last home league victory over them came on 6 April 2015.

Glenn Murray and Jason Puncheon scored in a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park, with Yaya Touré replying for Manuel Pellegrini’s City.

More than 11 years have passed without Palace repeating it.

City’s dominance is also reflected in our look back at their recent meetings with Palace, with the Blues having enjoyed several convincing victories in the fixture.

Last season’s visit ended in another convincing victory.

Erling Haaland headed City in front shortly before half-time, Phil Foden made it 2-0 after the break and Haaland completed a 3-0 win from the penalty spot late on.

The scoreline was comfortable, although Palace had their moments. Yeremy Pino and Adam Wharton both struck the woodwork during the game.

Palace have still caused City problems

The record at Selhurst does not tell the entire story.

Palace have produced several notable results against City during the Premier League era.

The first came at Selhurst Park in April 1995, when Palace won 2-1.

Twenty years later, they repeated the scoreline at the same ground.

Their other two Premier League victories have both come at the Etihad.

One of them arrived in December 2018.

City were defending champions when Palace came from behind to win 3-2, with Andros Townsend scoring a spectacular first-time volley from outside the penalty area.

Palace did it again in October 2021, winning 2-0 after Aymeric Laporte was sent off.

But neither victory carried the significance of what happened at Wembley in May 2025.

Five memorable Crystal Palace v Man City meetings

Man City 11-4 Crystal Palace – February 1926

A result belonging to a very different footballing age.

City scored 11 in an FA Cup fifth-round tie at Maine Road, a scoreline which has never been matched in this fixture.

Man City 2-3 Crystal Palace – December 2018

One of Palace’s finest Premier League away victories.

Ilkay Gündogan put City ahead before Jeffrey Schlupp equalised and Townsend produced the moment of the afternoon with a thunderous volley.

Luka Milivojević added a penalty before Kevin De Bruyne pulled one back late on.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Man City – March 2022

There were no goals, but the result mattered.

City were fighting Liverpool for the title and dropped two points after failing to break Palace down.

They eventually finished the season one point ahead of Liverpool.

Crystal Palace 1-0 Man City – May 2025

The game Palace supporters will remember above all the others.

City arrived at Wembley looking to finish a difficult season with the FA Cup but were beaten 1-0.

Eberechi Eze scored after 16 minutes as Palace won the first major trophy in their history.

For all City’s superiority across the wider head-to-head, no meeting between these sides has carried greater consequences.

Crystal Palace 0-3 Man City – December 2025

City’s most recent trip to Selhurst Park.

Palace twice hit the woodwork, but Haaland scored either side of Foden’s goal as City came away with all three points.

A fixture increasingly dominated by City

The historical numbers tell one story; the modern sequence tells an even clearer one.

Palace have beaten City only four times in 32 Premier League meetings.

Two came at Selhurst Park, in 1995 and 2015. The other two were at the Etihad, in 2018 and 2021.

The last of those four league victories is now nearly five years ago.

At Selhurst Park, the wait stretches back more than 11 years.

Palace have nevertheless shown that league records do not always matter when these clubs meet.

Wembley in May 2025 remains the obvious reminder.

Friday night brings them together again, this time at a ground where City have become extremely difficult to beat.

Another victory would extend City’s unbeaten Premier League run at Selhurst Park beyond 11 years and add to a head-to-head that has increasingly tilted towards the Blues.
