Nico Gonzalez completes Newcastle move as Man City recoup £50m

Nico Gonzalez has completed his permanent move from City to Newcastle, bringing his 18-month stay at the Etihad to an end.

City confirmed the transfer on Wednesday, with Newcastle announcing that the 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract and will wear the No.6 shirt.

The clubs have not disclosed the fee. Sky Sports reports that Newcastle will pay a package which could reach £50million with add-ons.

That would see City potentially recover the fee they paid Porto for Gonzalez in February 2025.

Gonzalez leaves Man City after 59 appearances

Gonzalez played 59 times for City in all competitions and scored four goals.

He was part of the squad which won both domestic cups last season and scored in the FA Cup semi-final victory over Southampton.

His departure had looked increasingly likely over the past week.

Gonzalez was initially reported to be determined to stay and fight for his place, but Newcastle continued their pursuit and City were prepared to let him leave.

The midfielder has now explained that the prospect of playing more regularly influenced his decision.

“I’ve loved my time here, but I have a desire to play more often,” Gonzalez told City’s official website.

He leaves on the same day City confirmed the arrival of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, while Elliot Anderson has also joined Enzo Maresca’s midfield this summer.

Gonzalez was presented to the Newcastle supporters at St James’ Park before Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup game against West Bromwich Albion.

It brings a relatively short City career to a close, but potentially without a significant loss on the original transfer fee.
