Why Savinho has become Sávio again after leaving Man City for Spurs

City supporters will have to get used to a familiar player having a slightly different name at Tottenham this season.

Savinho completed his move to Spurs this week for an initial £75m, potentially rising to £85m with add-ons.

Except he is no longer being called Savinho.

Tottenham unveiled the Brazilian as Sávio, with the name also appearing on the back of his new No.17 shirt.

For those who followed him before his move to City, it will be familiar.

Why Savinho used a different name at Man City

Sávio Moreira de Oliveira played under the name Sávio at Girona before joining City in the summer of 2024.

The change to Savinho followed his first senior call-up by Brazil earlier that year.

‘In the national team, the first call-up they put Savinho on the shirt,’ he explained after arriving at City.

He liked the name and decided to keep it, saying at the time that he hoped it would bring him luck.

Savinho was subsequently used throughout his City career.

Two years later, Tottenham have gone back to Sávio.

Neither the player nor Spurs have given a reason for the switch, so it is not clear whether it was a specific request or simply a return to the name he used earlier in his career.

City supporters knew him as Savinho.

Tottenham supporters will know him as Sávio.
